Reinventing Stock picking with

Advanced Research and
Decision Analytics

The use of technology in investing used to be a bit like chess—a binary choice between a human or a computer. Asset owners were forced to choose between quants on one side and fundamental analysts on the other. The landscape today—in both chess and investing—has changed. Rather than pitting humans versus machines, bleeding-edge performance requires harnessing the unique strengths of both. Investment managers who fail to embrace these changes risk being left behind.

In this presentation, we provide a fundamental stockpicker’s perspective on how the latest technologies can be leveraged at two critical points in the investment process: research and decision analytics. In conducting research, analysts can use alternative datasets and advanced analytics, including machine-learning techniques, to develop a stronger thesis on an individual stock. These same tools are now being used to support deeper analysis of the quality of decisions being made across the entire portfolio, helping decision-makers—and those responsible for assessing them—distinguish skill from luck. By combining the best of what humans and machines have to offer, investment managers—like “freestyle” chess players—can make better decisions about the stocks they buy and the people they promote, ultimately improving their odds of delivering truly long-term alpha for clients.
