Pension Investing

Going from Black & White into Colour

Pension plans used to invest 60% of their money in stocks and 40% in bonds, an approach which for the sake of labeling we are calling balanced “1.0”.

Institutional investors have evolved over the last 20 years, from this more traditional “1.0” balanced approach predominantly invested in developed markets equities and bonds, to one which we are calling balanced “2.0” which includes private assets, more aggressive bond strategies and emerging markets. It seems that every conference now includes sessions on alternative investments, new products and ways to get more out of your portfolio.

What are the reasons for this change and do these new products provide true diversification? Are there any pitfalls to be aware of? Is there a crowded trade going on in which investors are chasing a popular idea?

In this session we will review the changes in the funding environment for pension plans and how low interest rates have created new pressures for pension plan fiduciaries. We will discuss some of the rationale for these new asset mixes, we explain some of the pros and cons and how the smoothing of returns in the private markets is a factor to be aware of. You will leave with a better understanding of sources of diversification and your key considerations, should you be considering a move to “2.0”.
