Why Good Governance Matters
Wednesday, May 4, 2016

Governance is the framework by which pension plans are directed and controlled. Governance principles should apply to all types and sizes of pension plans. An effective framework is critical to adapting to the changing circumstances of a pension plan. While each plan is unique, the importance of developing governance framework is not.
Our session will focus on different aspects of pension plan governance and why it matters. Our panelists represent particular stakeholders of a pension plan with varying viewpoints of pension governance. Each speaker will relay their personal experience and why pension plan governance matters to them. Our panel includes:
  • Ernie MacKinnon – Trustee, Public Service Shared Risk Pension Plan (ret. CEO, New Brunswick Investment Management Corporation)
  • Alex Mazer – Founding Partner, Common Wealth
  • Doug Moodie – Co-Chair, Board of Directors for the Nova Scotia Pension Services Corporation; Vice-Chair, Public Service Superannuation Plan Trustees Inc.
  • Lori Park – Office Leader, Mercer, Halifax
We will end our session with our Keynote Speaker, David Miller, General Counsel and Senior Vice President, Governance, Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan.  He will provide us with the experience of setting up and maintaining the governance structure of a large pension plan.
