Webinar (May 2019)

The Race for Assets

Canada vs. The World

In recent years, alternative assets, such as private equity, real estate, infrastructure, private debt and hedge funds, have seen increasing allocations from pension plan sponsors and other institutional investors.  Against this backdrop, CIBC Mellon and BNY Mellon deployed a survey of more than 400 global and Canadian institutional investors and managers, covering such focus areas as:

  • Current alternative asset exposures and future plans across real estate, infrastructure, private equity, private debt and hedge funds
  • Access strategies
  • Expectations of fund managers
  • Transparency
In this webinar, segment leaders from CIBC Mellon and BNY Mellon will share key findings, speak to trends in the alternatives investment space globally, and offer insights regarding how Canadian investors apply similar or differing approaches to their global counterparts.  The webinar will cover:

  • Alternative asset allocations continue to grow. What is fueling their rise?
  • Asset classes are vying for position in Canada and globally. Which are up and which are down?
  • The standards for fund managers are changing. What do investors want?
  • Canadian institutional investors are a group apart. What makes them unique?
“We’re seeing growing interest from sophisticated asset owners in establishing direct investment plans,” said Megan Gentilesco, Director, Alternative Investment Services, BNY Mellon.  “Experienced investors see this as a way to improve the economics of private market investing, as well as gain transparency into underlying investments and ensure their investments are consistent with their program requirements such as Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors.”

“Recent moves in Canada suggest that our nation will become an even larger source of capital for alternative strategies,” said Jon Lofto, Director, Alternatives, CIBC Mellon.  “The stage is set for increased participation in alternative investments by Canadian institutions, many of which continue to serve as models for best practice on a global level.”
